Sometimes a habit makes perfect sense.

You are stressed, so you reach for something familiar.

You are bored, so you fall into an automatic behaviour.

You feel anxious, so you repeat something that has become associated with relief.

But sometimes the …

October brings Stoptober, and every year thousands of people decide that this will be the month they finally stop smoking.

You may already know exactly why you want to stop.

Perhaps it is your health. The cost. Your family. The smell.

Your breathing.

Or …

Imagine your friend phones you after making a mistake at work.

“I can’t believe I did that,” they say. “I feel such an idiot.”

What would you say?

Would you tell them:

“You’re useless.”

Someone tells you that you look lovely.

Or that you did a brilliant job.

Perhaps they tell you how confident you seemed in a meeting, how well you handled a difficult situation or how much they appreciate something you have done.

And what happens?

Instead …

In a nutshell: A lack of confidence is rarely about the situation in front of you. It is almost always about a belief that formed a long time ago, often without you noticing, and your unconscious mind has been protecting you by following it ever since. …

Have you ever looked at someone who seems confident and assumed they must simply know what they're doing all the time?

They seem to have the answer. They speak without hesitation. They make decisions without endlessly questioning themselves.

And then …

Have you ever found yourself doing something before you have really decided to do it?

You make a cup of tea and automatically reach for the biscuit tin.

You get into the car and reach for your vape.

Something feels uncertain and your mind immediately …

Have you ever looked back at a younger version of yourself and wondered:

Where did that person go?

Perhaps you remember being carefree, determined or willing to have a go without analysing everything first.

Yet somewhere along the way, that changed.

Now you …

Why habits feel harder during stressful periods

Most people think habits are built on discipline.

Overthinking isn’t the problem — it’s the mind trying to help

Overthinking is often described as something people need to stop.

Why anxiety doesn’t go away just because you understand it.

You can understand anxiety logically.

You can tell yourself you’re safe.

You can even know there is nothing to worry about.

And yet, your body still reacts.

Most people believe habits are hard to change because they lack willpower.

They tell themselves they need to try harder, be more disciplined, or finally “stick to a decision”.

And when the habit returns, it’s often followed by frustration, …

One of the biggest reasons people struggle when they try to stop smoking has nothing to do with willpower.

It’s the story they’ve been told about what stopping means.

Most people assume overeating comes down to willpower.

But the truth is, what’s driving that behaviour isn’t weakness — it’s internal wiring.

One of the most common questions people ask before booking sessions with me is:
